sneak peek: ally of from the right bank to the left coast

rightbank1
artist and design blogger (from the right bank to the left coast) ally has moved so frequently -  two overseas moves, several times across the country and many moves across cities – that she’s been dubbed the modern-day nomad by friends. a self-identified design junkie, each move gives ally the opportunity to decorate a new space and leads to the discovery of new shopping sources, so it’s not surprising that her seattle home is a seemingly effortless mix of the modern and the antique where everything seems to be carefully selected and collected. {thanks, ally!} – amy a

[Our last move was from Paris to Seattle and on the very first day of our house hunting trip, my husband and I found a green, contemporary house in the middle of the city that was in the beginning of the construction phase. Even though it was basically just a shell of a house at the time, we could visualize how it was going to turn out and bought it on the spot! It’s turned out to be the perfect house for our two dogs and us and to this day we can’t believe our luck.

Some of my favorite objects in our home are the antique French and Flemish paintings in the living room. I especially like them contrasted with the exposed beams and contemporary furniture.]

rightbank2
Having moved so much, you can imagine our furnishings are from all over the place. I’ve also always been a fan of mixing styles so our home is a real mishmash of old/new, froufrou/modern, high/low . . .

I absolutely love white interiors and am always fantasizing about having an all white house. The closest that I’ve gotten to that is our bedroom. I’ve tried to inject color into the room a few times but I love the white on white so much, I always end up taking the color out after a week or so.

rightbank6

My favorite spot in the house is the reading area on the upstairs landing. We have huge windows there so it gets great natural light all day (even in gray Seattle!) and it’s the perfect place to settle in with a good book or my backlog of magazines. On most days, you can even see Mount Rainier.

rightbank7
A lot of my favorite things seem to have all ended up in the dining room: a black and white photography collection, an antique Baccarat chandelier and a pair of Louis XVI chairs.

Recently discovered your blog via my daughters. Love the aesthetics of this world travelers home. Curious about what looks like a distressed metal fireplace surround or TV cabinet?

I love your home! Can you tell me the maker/source for the clear glass lamp with red shade and for the glass votive holder in photo w/2 dogs? Thanks.

Lovely! Alek has such a great eye for design! And I love how she mixes styles and textures with high and low price tags! And she is a very friendly blogger as well!

I love Ally’s blog and sense of style, so it is such a treat to see all these beautiful pictures of her home! The dining room is such a perfect blend of vintage and new. And, the outdoor dining table is just dreamy.

I love this Sneak Peek. I’m a big fan of mixing ornate antiques with modern. And I love the white bedroom, even though that will never happen for us. :)

x4 on the lamp. Is it DWR?

such a lovely, sun-drenched place — especially love the fireplace vignette + white-on-white in the bedroom

I am pretty much obsessed with that orange chair. There’s something about orange that is modern, but incredibly cozy. The perfect balance.

I’m at the point now that I recognized photos of Alec’s house whenever they make it to the interiors sites. It really is a special place.

November 2nd, 2009 - 4:46 pm

Hi, everyone, thank you so much for all the lovely comments! Here are some answers to your questions:

The fireplace surround is made from a sheet of reclaimed metal.

The clear lamp is the Zak Table Lamp from Crate & Barrel.

The votive is actually a scented candle from Esteban. The little beaded ring around it was a gift and I’m not sure where it’s from.

The white walls are Benjamin Moore White #1. I had the whole housed painted in it and would use it again in a heartbeat!

November 2nd, 2009 - 5:12 pm

Oh wow! Love it all, especially the bright colours and the all-white bedroom! Delish! My cat Mooshie (Burmese) would have that duvet cover looking grubby in no time :-)

I adore your design sense and wonderful eclectic mix of textures and colours – bravo you two! PS – is my bedroom ready yet?

Could you please let me know what the name of the black & white Ikea rug is? I don’t think it’s available in the Australian range but they’re trying to convince me it’s called Sveje. Thanks

Ally, can you comment on what it is like to move to Seattle after living in Paris and other major cities? We are contemplating a move there from New York City and am looking for some perspective. Your place is gorgeous, bright, and inviting. Thank you for sharing!

November 3rd, 2009 - 4:41 pm

Hi, again. Thank you for your comment. To answer your questions:

The Ikea rug is called “Stockholm Rand” here in the US.

Yes, the ceilings and walls are all painted the same Benjamin Moore White #1.

We got our dogs after we moved to Seattle so they’re actually not French! :D

The orange chair is the “Pop” Chair from Ligne Roset.

Seattle is smaller, slower and less “urban” than Paris or NY, which can be a positive or negative, depending on your lifestyle. But it is a very pleasant and comfortable city to live in. It has an excellent climate (really!) and the natural beauty all around is very special. If you have specific questions, feel free to email me at rightbankgirl (at) gmail (dot) com.

Thank you so much Ally– this is just the perspective I was looking for. It’s really refreshing to hear someone speak of Seattle’s climate as excellent. I imagine all of that natural light you get in your home doesn’t hurt… ; )

Many thanks.
