living in: bright star

I basically held my hand in front of my mouth for the entire length of Bright Star. Sheer and utter, insane beauty. Desperately romantic. Hopelessly sweet and sad. Even now, days later, I’m still a little dizzy thinking about it. Fellow d*s editor Amy A. did me a huge favor by sitting me down to watch it- a favor I am now thrilled to bestow upon you, lovely readers.

rose jacquard ribbon $39/yd, linen fabric, trumeau mirror $449, antique correspondence, antique paste & pearl ring $225, candlestick, book boxes $49, embroidery scissors $20, directoire chest $1300, intermission heels $348, gold thimble $2, fireplace tools $79.

Bright Star follows the bittersweet romance between famed poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, the girl next door. Words are not enough to describe the beautiful homes, dresses and devastatingly handsome poets. When Fanny turns her bedroom into a living butterfly sanctuary, I suffered an extreme case of housing jealousy. But I waaant to live in a rooooom with butterflies! Luckily for both you and me- it’s a real possibility. -amy m.

tussentaal cabinet $2498, butterflies $39+, tufted leather sofa $2900, quill and ink set $15, butterfly net $6.75, demijohn bottle $125, vintage scandinavian books $40, bluebell wild flower seeds $2, antique lyre brooch $85.

The field of wild flowers is beautiful. I may have to do that with a section of our property. I just hope it attracts more butterflies and hummingbirds than bees.

oh how i wish the wild flower by my house is that color! btw, just added the movie on netflix. can’t wait!

I wanted too add this but hit the submit button too quickly! You mentioned living in a room with butterflies: Next time you get down to Miami take a short drive north to Coconut Creek to Butterfly World. It’s touristy but magical (I promise!)..

Omg I’ve been waiting for this Bright Star edition of “Living in…” I recently just saw the film and was positively spellbound. It’s achingly beautiful, as is John Keats’ poetry (I’m a huge admirer of his work). I love that field of of bluebells, love Keats’ navy jacket, love the tiny hand-written notes throughout the film. Such beauty!

P.S. Amy M, your “Living In” post is missing the most important element of all: a book of John Keats’ poetry!

I’ve seen this movie twice already and cry and sigh and love it each time! This “Living In…” is simply lovely.

Ooo, so pretty. I watched it two weeks ago and still get teary-eyed when I think of it. Her screaming “Mama!” at the end…heartbreaking.

The style was so dreamy.

This movie was visually so stunning. There’s a shot near the end where everything is dreamy and pastel-colored like things never are in real life…I loved just…looking at this movie, you know? Never mind the acting and the story itself, which are both wonderful, if heartbreaking.

this movie was like poetry…visually one of the most stunning films I have ever seen. Jane Campion is a genius. Yes, I would love to live in a butterfly room, too :)

This movie definitely had gorgeous elements to it. Love the butterfly room idea! But it was also very depressing at certain points that I couldn’t go on watching.

February 9th, 2010 - 4:20 pm

Oh man! Just yesterday I did a post on my blog about how positively stunning this movie was to watch. Every scene was so beautiful. The colors! Oh the colors! I’ve been telling everyone who will listen that they have to see this movie because it really is just such a sight to behold. I’m so happy to see that someone else was a taken by it as I was!

I love Jane Campion’s aesthetics – even her brutal films like ‘In the Cut’ are lovely to look at. I haven’t seen Bright Star but this has given me even more reason to do so. Thanks!!

February 9th, 2010 - 4:57 pm

you can get the stork embroidery scissors from joann’s for about $5. Unless you embroider, etc. every day, they’ll do you fine. Just sayin’.

THIS MOVIE was soooo beautiful! The cinematography was awesome! AWESOME!!!! ;)

February 9th, 2010 - 6:52 pm

This looks so beautiful. I can’t believe that although Jane Campion is a New Zealander, the film has still not been released here! Oh well, I suppose that’s what you get for living at the end of the world. In the meantime, I’ll just watch the trailer.

I love this film so much. I love Jane Campion so much and I love the Living In series! I decided after watching this film that I will need to buy it because I want to watch it over and over. You can just feel and smell the air in this film and there is so much sweetness. Campion’s films are so sense-filled… I guess that is sensual. Also, I love Fanny’s younger brother and the kitty. They are smaller parts but both are so sweet. I could mention so many little moments but I’m forcing myself to quit this silly commenting! Hurrah beautiful film!

Thanks for posting this! I just watched the film for the first time last week and I’m surprised it didn’t get more critical acclaim. It is beautiful, but Abbie Cornish steals the film. She is phenomenol in this!

I have been raving to everyone about this film for yonks, but no one I know has watched it!! Thank goodness there are other kindred spirits out there.
I just finished reading “Keats” by Andrew Motion (the bio that inspired the film), it make you realize just how talented Jane Campion is. How come it’s only nominated for Best Costume?
Great post. Thanks :)

Check out the film “A Single Man”.
Everything about it is beautiful, and so stylish and glam, just what you’d expect from Tom Ford.

We saw this a few months ago, it’s one of the most gorgeous films I’ve ever seen — so excited to hear it’s out on DVD. It inspired my boyfriend to start reading poetry [which he, in turn, reads to me. Quelle romantique!]

That link from Sam is awesome, though should note that *SPOILER*
