Design Sponge
section: before and after

today’s final makeovers are tackling larger spaces. first up is a living room and dining area in northern california. designer cecile lozano in san francisco was able to make over this space for a young couple with children in orinda, ca. their 1950s ranch was in a great location, but the interior didn’t reflect their style, so cecile created a new color palette of “not-so-timid green and deep mocha”. two-tone tan stripes were used along one wall and new window treatments were used to add color and pattern. inexpensive rugs from west elm were mixed in with existing furniture to give a more modern, streamlined log and vintage accessories from the local flea market were added for the final touch. i love the new look- well done, cecile! this lovely home office makeover comes from kate at centsational girl. tired of closing the door to her office when company came, kate decided to spend a few months making over the entire space from top to bottom. her budget-friendly renovation involved paint and some great $20 clearance bookcases and the final result is a room that definitely doesn’t need to be hidden from visitors. great work, kate! click here to read more about kate’s project.

i’m in love this with makeover from miriam of madmim. she and her husband were getting married and trying to scrounge up furniture, so they decided to go with these two $10 pieces from a college apt sale. the “cheap laminate wood” wasn’t doing much for miriam and, as she put it, “planned on replacing them ASAP, but ASAP turned into As Soon As I-get-around-to-it, and then…IDRSMOMIT (I’d Rather Spend Money On More Important Things).” using a stencil from ed roth’s stencil 101 decor and a few coats of poly for durability, miriam created her own custom pattern that, to me, looks remarkably like inlay from afar. i love the color she chose and think it works perfectly with these pieces. miriam explained, “i wouldn’t do this to a solid wood piece of furniture, but i don’t feel any remorse for painting veneer”. and what a great paint job it was. well done, miriam!

my inbox was overflowing with fun before & afters this week so i’m kicking things off early today with two great furniture projects. first up is jelena, who rehabs furniture to sell on her etsy shop poppyseed living. the small dresser above (named “hazel”) was cleaned up and finished with anthropologie knobs to give the piece new life. now it’s headed to a new owner’s home in new york, saved from an untimely curbside death. jelena’s second piece (below) was another found piece that was cleaned up and refinished to allow some of the original wood grain to show through. you can see more of jelena’s furniture makeovers right here on etsy- thanks, jelena!

every week i pour through our before & after submissions and get excited about the scores of upholstery and paint projects people have done. but when i see something like this in my inbox, my excitement meter goes off the charts. inspired by bddw’s captain’s mirror, d*s reader lucy gunawan decided to get crafty and convert an inexpensive clock into her own do-it-yourself captain’s mirror. the concept alone is clever, but the fact that she busted out a reversible leather trim, grommets, and a gorgeous hanging peg takes the project to a whole new level. i am in awe of the finished products- they are gorgeous.

as if this project wasn’t inspiring enough, lucy was kind enough to share her detailed project steps for creating the look in your home. so let me be the first to say “thank you!” to lucy for sharing this gorgeous project and the steps for recreating the look in your own home. thank you, lucy!

*stay tuned for a new we like it wild post at 2pm (studio choo is teaching us how to knit plant cozies!)

this san francisco loft makeover comes from anastasia at faiella design, who shared a great mural makeover with us last year. anastasia worked with a homeowner in the SOMA area of san francisco to create a home that was warm and modern, using a mix of osborne and little fabrics and affordable furniture from shops like west elm and crate & barrel. i’d be happy to pack up and move into this light-filled space any day. thanks for sharing, anastasia!

today’s first before & afters are all about chairs. d*s reader kari recently had her first child and wanted to update a rocker to use in his room. after finding a $10 wooden rocker on craigslist, kari cleaned up the frame and reupholstered the seat and back pads with a cheerful new fabric to match the nursery’s color theme. well done, kari!

normally before & afters on d*s are dedicated to regular folks like you and me, but it’s fun to see what a pro would do every once in a while. so i couldn’t resist sharing this seriously amazing dining room makeover from mcgill design group in toronto. james from mcgill sent over this room transformation that makes use of added wall and ceiling molding, along with a gorgeous dark blue/black ceiling. it’s hard to see the high ceilings in the first image, but even without that height to compare, it is one heck of a new and improved room. it makes me want to start painting my ceilings all sorts of different colors. thanks so much for james for sending this by- click here to check out more of mcgill’s work online.

leila khalil of be inspired pr (which specializes in weddings, fun!) sent over her own 400 square foot office makeover. as a ’small business owner with a dream’, leila wanted to create a beautiful space on an affordable budget. she turned around this once-drab studio and created a colorful place to work and meet with clients. how did she do it? here are leila’s tips for making the move from home to “real” office space:

-search locally: instead of looking in a big metropolis, find what works close to home in a place that is affordable and accessible
-check your ego out the door: don’t expect to have the big corner office right away! Work with what you’ve got and be creative with your set up. I share my space with my whole team, which promotes camaraderie.
-finding a high end look for less: collect images of what inspires you and find it in a price range that fits your budget. maybe its target, home goods, zgallerie, etc..
-get your hands dirty: you may have to go to ikea to achieve the luxury look for less, but get ready to assemble it yourself.
-be bold: don’t be afraid to go with bright colors and textures. Be you and make your space a reflection of who you are!

thanks to leila for sharing her transformation- great work!
