Design Sponge
section: before and after

d*s reader summer took the words right out of my mouth: “so many chair re-finishers and so little blog space”. but we both agreed that this piece was too lovely to pass up. so for those of you who are cursing me for running more chairs- i’m sorry, but i love this chair. summer meza of modernhaus sent over this chair makeover- she described the before as a “hospital lobby” chair but after a spruce up and some fab new fabric from ikea (only $5.99 a yard)- it’s anything but a drab hospital lobby chair. i’m loving the fabric so if you’re interested in picking up a yard just click here. thanks, summer!

d*s reader jess in austin sent along this great radio table before and after. jess explained that she found this piece on the side of the road and picked it up. then she grabbed a $5 can of mis-matched lime green paint from home depot and repainted the piece for a new look. the radio instead still works so now jess has an updated piece of furniture that only cost her $5. great work, jess!

d*s reader and rainy day rose blogger rosemary updated her $2 chair with glossy black paint and some inexpensive ikea fabric. it’s such a great example of design on a dime. stay tuned for 2 more (non-chair) furniture makeovers tomorrow…

olga has shared some pretty incredible before & afters with us before and i’m loving this classy update on a bland nightstand she just sent over. it’s amazing what some framing, black paint and crystal detailing can do…thanks, olga!

alischa of bespoke press has been in the process of a year-long renovation of her lovely brisbane home. yesterday she sent over some beautiful photos of the before and afters (bathroom and living room) and i was floored with the level of construction they undertook. i consider repainting a major job so whenever i see woodworking involved i’m always super impressed. i love the clean modern look alischa and her husband created and thought you guys might enjoy the finished product. congrats to alischa and her husband on a job well done. click here to read about their renovation project- don’t miss the story of a car crashing into their home!

i love this glam little makeover cheryl gave her drum table. after finding this piece in her neighbor’s garbage, cheryl stripped, sanded and painted it. the final touch was a shiny glass knob and now she has a swanky new cabinet for her cocktail/liquor.

i’m such a sucker for a simple chair makeover. i’m loving this before & after courtesy of d*s reader kelsey. all she needed was a coat of paint and some bold fabric from ikea and tah-dah! a new look for under $20.

it’s been a while since we’ve had a full room makeover so i was thrilled to see paula prass‘ office makeover land in my inbox this week. paula is an interior designer who just licensed her first line of fabrics through michael miller- she decided to makeover her design studio in celebration of the new launch and i think she did a fantastic job. i love the color scheme she chose and, after seeing her before shots, think she pulled a serious 180 in terms of brightness, mood and inspiration. it definitely looks like an office where i’d be happy to work. as opposed to the sad laundry room it looked like before. click here to visit paula’s blog and here and here to see more of her work. thanks, paula!

[ps: be sure to catch the cute shot at the bottom of the wooden figure “holding up” a metal panel]

chair makeovers are always my favorite because a simple coat of paint and new fabric only take a few hours and can make a huge difference. this lovely butter-yellow example comes from jessica davids at jdavids on etsy.
