lauren and derek have a fantastic july 4th-themed diy project coming up at 1pm but first we’re kicking off diy wednesday with a great project from designer alli coate. i’ve long admired the lace jars alli sells on etsy and couldn’t resist asking if she’d be willing to share the steps to create them. she kindly obliged and now we all have the option of making our own custom version, or picking up a handmade finished jar made by alli herself ($6-$7 each). the great thing about this project is that you can add your own touch, whether that’s with a vintage jar, or by using colored painted tops and additional decorations. click here to read alli’s full instructions or just click “read more” below to start crafting! [thanks to alli for sharing this project with us!]

[ps: alli is currently job-hunting in the providence, RI area so if you're looking for a talented lady to hire you can drop her a line right here]

[pps: if you submitted a diy project to me this week, unfortunately my inbox has totally imploded on itself. could you please resend any submitted diy projects if you've sent them this week? thanks!]

we’ve got two fantastic diy projects coming up at 12 and 1 but i thought these craft tutorial videos from kelly at craft amour were too fun to pass up. click here for the decorative ribbon candies tutorial and here for the paper flower magnet project.

we came across these tiles during one of our regular hardware store browsing sessions. normally used to tile your kitchen or bathroom, they’re an irresistible bargain at 45 cents apiece. add a little spray painted design and some stick-on vinyl pads for feet and you’ve got yourself a custom trivet for less than $1. (while we were at it, we couldn’t resist cutting out the same flower silhouette on cardstock to make a few bright little window garlands.) click here for the full instructions (and pattern template) for both projects or just click “read more” below.

have fun!

d*s reader mariana leung submitted this great diy project as part of this year’s diy contest. having recently purchased a new home (and spending “every dollar” she had to “make it livable”), mariana didn’t have a big budget left over for decoration, so she turned to her embroidery skills (which she uses in her career as an embroidery and fashion designer in nyc) to create this handmade felt mural for her wall. the best part? she created everything you see here with leftover felt scraps from previous projects- i love seeing what people can do when they reuse materials. thanks to mariana for sharing her project with us- click here for the full post with instructions or just click “read more” below. happy crafting! (stay tuned for another diy project at 2pm today)

recently, we’ve been making an effort to a) pack ourselves delicious lunches, and b) rid our lives of wasteful, disposable plastic bags. we find it’s much easier to accomplish these things when we’ve got a cute and useful alternative. in honor of this week’s wonderful guest bloggers, we thought it would be both fun and oh-so-appropriate to whip up this faux bois oilcloth lunchbag. brown-baggin’ it has never been so fun! click here for the full project or just click “read more” below.

enjoy!

hello again! we’re so excited to be back here on design*sponge sharing our recent craft and diy adventures with you all. last weekend we did a little event at our shoppe in conjunction with readymade magazine that was so fun we thought we’d share it with you. artist neil freese (whose work graces the cover of the current issue of readymade) taught us all how to make our favorite classic camp craft: god’s eyes. we were so inspired that we couldn’t resist whipping up a few lanyard keychains (swapping out plastic “boondoggle” for ultrasuede tape). they were a blast to make, and would also be perfect father’s day gifts. click here for the full instructions for both projects or just click “read more” below.

see you around the campfire!

i’m loving these ceramic transfers that heather (skinny laminx) and jesse breytenbach have created. after drawing little plants she had collected on a walk on table mountain, heather turned her drawings into transfers and applied them dinner plates. they were made for a show in johannesburg (and promptly sold out), but thankfully heather created a fantastic tutorial on how to create your own plates like this. for the full instructions click here- thanks heather!

[stay tuned for one more diy project at 2pm today- lauren and derek are back! and their projects will take you right back to summer camp]

growing up in the south, i have a special place in my heart for mason jars. i enjoy them filled to the brim with icy sweet tea, but this fun project from d*s reader whitney gaylord may be my new favorite way to enjoy them. unlike most of our other diy projects, this one will require a bit of professional help (installing anything involving electricity is no joke) but the majority of the steps are easy to handle and will require only a quick call to your local electrician (home depot offers these services, too) to install the final project. click here for the full instructions or just click “read more” below - thanks to whitney for sharing!
