[today's city guide comes courtesy of our providence guest blogger this week- christine chitnis. click here to check out her posts on the d*s guest blog]

providence has often been thought of as the “suburban sister” of boston, but whoever said that, obviously hasn’t been to providence in a while. downtown providence, while not quite bustling, is experiencing a resurrection, with a large mall and many new boutiques setting up shop. but the real heart and soul of this town is the higher learning institutes. providence is home to brown university, rhode island school of design (RISD) and johnson and wales (among others). these schools and their students add flavor and diversity to the area and are instrumental in drawing in the quirky stores and restaurants that appeal to the college crowds.

although Providence is not an incredibly large city, there are several different shopping sections, each with a very different feel. besides shopping, there are many university attractions and local activites, which are highlighted at the end of the guide. i hope you’ll enjoy the guide and check out some of the great shops and attractions that providence has to offer. last month we packed up a rental car and headed to new york’s hamptons- a playground for the rich and famous- but also for anyone with a passion for great design and antiques. along with our summer interns christy and lesley, we checked out our favorite shops and destinations throughout the area and filmed a little trip video thanks to our friend and videographer jimmy benedetto. we thought it would be a fun way to document our summer-staff trip and set the mood for what was one heck of a fun city guide to build. despite the torrential downpour the first day we were there we were able to check out a ton of great shops and hope you’ll enjoy this video and the following guide to design shopping in the hamptons. to view the full guide just click here, or click “read more” below.

thank you to jimmy benedetto for filming our trip and to bryan eich for the great soundtrack. *we just caught the typo at the end of the video. it’s music, not mucie. whoops!

cleveland.jpg
today’s city guide belongs to the city of cleveland, ohio and comes to us via local shop owner (and lover of all things cleveland), danielle deboe of room service. after leaving cleveland for LA a few years ago, danielle recently returned to open her own retail store and dedicate herself to cleveland’s design scene. her guide is chock-full of great shops and fantastic places to grab a bite, as cleveland has become quite the restaurant town (and his home to my chef-crush, michael symon). click here to read danielle’s full cleveland guide or just click “read more” below. thanks, danielle!

when i think of maine i think of being outside under a clear blue sky, relaxing in an adirondack chair with a good book and eating fresh picked blueberries as a cool breeze blows in off the water. i have fond memories from childhood of painting my uncle’s canoe green and picking raspberries across the lake for a homemade pie i baked with my aunt. sadly i haven’t been back to maine since, but after getting to know the local artists over the past few weeks in the regional roundup, i definitely have an itch to go back asap. lucky for us the amazingly talented karen gelardi and maria vettese have compiled fantastic city guide of the city they call home. click here to read more. enjoy! [thanks karen and maria!] -anne
