today’s city guide is devoted to sunny palm springs, california- which seems lightyears away from grey brooklyn today. jaime curtis of prudent baby created this fantastic guide to eating, shopping, site-seeing and staying in this fun desert city. jaime grew up playing tennis and golf with her mother at their palm springs condo and now works in palm springs for both her day job and upcoming book. she created a wonderful list of things to do and places to see in town so i hope you’ll enjoy her guide as much as i did.

my first summer back in new york after college involved a seriously long trek from brooklyn up to limestone, maine. i had to drive a giant white econoline van full of merch up to a phish festival and thankfully was able to stop for snacks a few time during the marathon drive. one of the stops i made was a quick bite for lunch in newport, rhode island. ever since i’ve wanted to get back to eat some lobster rolls and watch the ocean from the cliff walk. and today, thanks to andrea mchugh, i’ve finally got a guide of things to do in town if i ever get back. andrea is a freelancer writer who visited newport on whim and nested there a year later. today, she happily resides (and shops!) in the city-by-the-sea and is sharing her detailed local’s guide to shopping, eating, drinking, site-seeing, sailing, over-nighting and celebrating in newport. if you’re cruising up the east coast any time soon i highly suggest a stop in town- the view from the water is simply gorgeous. thanks to andrea for her hard work! today’s city guide is all about one of my favorite cities in the world- amsterdam. my best bud bryan lived there for years and we were fortunate enough to visit him a few years back for my birthday. the architecture, the gorgeous yellow light, all the public parks- it was such a gorgeous city to visit in the summer. today d*s reader jennifer wolfe is walking us through her favorite spots to eat, drink, shop and site-see in amsterdam. if you’re lucky enough to be visiting, be sure to check out jennifer’s guide and grab yourself a paper cone of fries with mayonnaise for me. that’s right- mayonnaise- i like the way the dutch think. thanks again to jennifer for sharing her recommendations with us. as always, if you have a favorite that’s missing feel free to add it in the comment section below.

Some folks, when asked about movies they love, rattle off a list of obscure art house films and directors no one knows. You’re left thinking, okay, but what movies to do you actually watch when no one else is around While I do like me some wackadoo movies, fluff like Dirty Dancing is always in my top 10. I mean, catskills resort vacation circa 1963, an awesome soundtrack and some cheesy dialogue? Makes me want to pop some corn and have a pillow fight with my best friends, slumber party style.

Honestly, I hadn’t ever really paused to considered Dirty Dancing a stylistic oeuvre, seeing as takes place in a hysterically blatant 1980s version of the 1960s, but who am I to judge. Its mountain bungalow setting is just amazing. Grace- next summer let’s book Kellerman’s for a design*sponge sleep away camp. Who’s with me? amy m.
