Joy is one of my favorite people to follow on Twitter since she moved to San Diego from Philadelphia. She has been sharing her new sunny lifestyle with her followers, in between launch parties (her own!), quick food adventures, and of course updates to her Oh Joy! blog. Joy brought us a fab recipe for little pizzas in the early days of the In the Kitchen With column. This week she’s back for a sweet recipe for one of her recent cravings in Southern California — Frozen yogurt and mochi! Even if it’s not warm and sunny where you are, I hope you’ll try this or be inspired to go find some frozen yogurt where you live. It’s never too cold for frozen yogurt is it? -Kristina

This week’s recipe is the creation of a talented young Australian chef, Joel Mackaay, whose white-table-cloth-silver-flatware-indoor barbecue dinner I was fortunate enough to attend last summer. It was some of the absolute most memorable BBQ I’ve eaten (and I’m from Tennessee, so I know good BBQ!). Those of us who were there are still talking about it today! For our column, Joel has offered us a recipe for an appetizer of porcini mushroom tapioca cakes. I know it is a bit at the outer edge of the porcini mushroom season for many of you, but there are still porcinis in the market where I live. I hope you will have the chance to try the recipe if you are so inclined. This is the second part of the New Zealand-based Our Kitchen team. Last week we featured the Vegetable Torta by Sara and Emma in Auckland. This week we have Cookie Cream Sandwiches (with cinnamon-chocolate semi-freddo!) from Adam, Lauren, and Susie in the Dunedin kitchen.

I came across the work of New Zealand based Sara and Emma quite by chance when reading comments to the blondies by Whimsy and Spice this summer. I envy the fact that they have their own creative space within their company to write about their passion for food. Their recipes are great as is the photography on their site. This week, given that it’s spring in their part of the world, they are sharing with us a (vegetarian) recipe for a layered vegetable ‘torta’, or savory pie. Next week, Sara and Emma’s colleagues, the other half of the “our kitchen” team will be here with a sweet recipe.

*sorry guys! i missed the non-veggie part of this recipe when i coded this last night. just remove the anchovies and ham and you’re home-free*

About Sara and Emma: Sara and Emma are half of the Fisher Paykel ‘our kitchen’ team. They are based in Auckland, New Zealand, and their colleagues (who you will meet next week for a sweet recipe) are in Dunedin. Sara, a trained cook, with a Bachelor degree in Human Nutrition got hooked on food as a child watching TV personalities like Graham Kerr, Jaques Pèpin and Martin Yan. Emma got the food bug from her mom and from the time she spent in Asia as a teenager. This passion has carried on into adulthood. Today she finds her inspiration in her vegetable garden which provides plenty of food to prepare fresh seasonal and unprocessed meals.

I love it when I am introduced to a photographer’s work which really inspires me. Jennifer Causey, the author of this week’s recipe, has a food portfolio which I find so very nice. It inspires me to find the beauty in the every day. Unintentionally, I think the best word to describe it is simple. I admire her skill of being able to make something so simple seem so grand. This week she offers her recipe for Whole Wheat Crepes with Spinach Pesto, Mushrooms, and Goat Cheese. Once you get the hang of crepe making, you won’t ever stop! Enjoy, Kristina.

i met emma as we both frantically took notes during survey 1 in the history of decorative arts and design program at parsons. i remember standing next to her at the photocopy machine that very first semester when she told me that she really wanted to be a baker. my first thought was ‘what are you doing here?’ closely followed by ‘wonder if she’ll bring treats to class?’

emma graduated from parsons in may and has managed to marry her two loves – she teaches the history of decorative arts to aspiring interior designers and she just started dulcinea. in addition to making specialty cakes and baked goods for order, the cornerstone of the business is emma’s weekly delivery of  baked goods, which are inspired by the best seasonal produce available. it’s a csa for baked goods! (wouldn’t it be the perfect gift for a new mom or newlyweds?) although after sampling way too many herb and gruyere scones, i can safely say that this is a gift that would make anyone smile! -amy a

Aran’s dessert featured in July was so inviting, I couldn’t fight my curiosity to know what type of savory dish she might cook up. I was so so pleased with the result. Having just returned from Dublin, where I had lots of smoked salmon, this dish will definitely be served soon in my home. We’re being spoiled this week, because Aran’s wonderful tart is also accompanied by a great autumn soup of butternut squash and orange cauliflower (I never even knew Orange Cauliflower existed!).
