not all design is for grown ups- sometimes the little ones need designs made especially for them. i’m loving these new bedding patterns from nurseryworks at sparkability and these super cool pendant lights at moderntots. i’d even consider the lights for myself if my house was a little funkier.

mahar

jen corace is a phenomenal artist so when i heard that she’d designed the website for mahar dry goods, i was all ears (and eyes). robert mahar wrote to tell me about his great new site that sells really unique vintage and artisan crafted goods for children. i don’t usually focus on design for children, but these pieces are really unique and special. and the site, well, jen corace did it so it’s amazing. very vintage and inspired by a 1930’s children’s book cover. all of the products at mahar were made in home and studios by artists, designers and crafters so check it out if you’re looking for some unique kids gifts or just a glimpse at some more great jen corace work. [thanks, robert!]

delong

jennifer delonge, wife of blink-182 member tom delonge, has created a really nice line of furniture for children. d*s reader lynn saw the chairs in people magazine and thought we might like them. of delonge’s work, the ava chair is my favorite. it is available in ultrasuede, cotton and a great range of vintage fabrics, which are my favorite. often children’s furniture is blobby and plastic so i really love that these chairs blend into a modern home without having spongebob plastered all over them. chairs run $300-$400 and are available right here. thanks for the tip, lynn!

Nursing room

this just came to my inbox without much explanation, but i’m intrigued. nursing room o+ is a collection by nika zupanc debuting in milan this spring. i’m assuming it’s an “ironic” look at motherhood and the pieces involved in it. when i have more info, i’ll post it. but this is one heck of a modern (and totally goth) rocker. click here to see nicka zupanc’s site. [it's certainly not everyone's cup of tea]

igloo, children’s furniture designed by lisa albin, will be on display at brooklyn designs, as well. fun, modern and functional, igloo’s furniture brings clean lines and modern form to the world of kiddy design- no more inflatable chairs here- just bent ply and tasteful veneers made of cherry or birch. click here for more info.

playshed_grey_raceya

stylish playhomes for the modern child have just arrived- courtesy of grey design studio and velocity. the modern playshed is a child’s prefab playhouse with clean, modern, customizable design. designed by ryan grey smith (architect and parent) in collaboration with velocity, the playshed is, “thoughtfully constructed to be as much fun to put together and decorate as it is for playtime”.

playshed_interior_2

each playshed is pre-fabricated and requires fairly simple assembly. basic tools required are: a power drill, level, hammer, tape measure, small wrench, utility knife (optional), caulk gun (optional for sealing windows or attaching optional floor tiles). in addition, a foundation is not required- a simple level surface (like a bed of gravel) is all that is required. for the seriously modern child, it certainly beats those plastic playhouses from toys r us. prices start at $2,995. click here for more info.
