section: lighting

designer reiko kaneko recently released two new pieces of gorgeous furniture: the ovangkol table and dapple light.
the ovangkol table seems to float in mid-air because it’s sturdy wooden top and legs float in crystal clear resin legs. i love the combination of heavy and light- it is such an elegant table, but still so warm and rich because of the wood.

the dapple light has a wood veneer shade and, on the inside, thousands of glass mirrors. inspired by a disco ball, the dapple light casts a dramatic shadow and creates an “explosion of light” thanks to all those tiny glass mirrors. click here to check out more of reiko’s work online. thanks, reiko!

it’s another rainy, overcast day here in brooklyn so my mind is focused on lights- anything that will keep the dreariness of the morning out of my living room.

i’m really enjoying judith van den boom’s latest collection of lighting, called ‘information reposed lights’. this series of ceramic lights plays with the motion of light beams by shaping ceramic compartments into various positions to direct the ‘light bundle’ in the right direction. you can stack or bundle the lights together to give a base for the lightbulb itself, making it functional for wall, pendant or table use. if you like what you see, you can find more information on judith’s work right here. thanks, judith!

i wanted to wrap up this week with some beautiful images of workroom new zealand’s work. all of their furniture and home accessories are made from recycled new zealand wood and have a wonderful sense of warmth to them. i’m in the process of rethinking our apartment and have been thinking about integrating some more warm wooden pieces- and these would be perfect. if only brooklyn was a bit closer to new zealand. click here for more info on workroom’s work. [thanks, rebecca!]

i’ll be back on monday with a full week of regular posting. i’m still about 800 emails behind and am catching up as quickly as possible, so i just wanted to apologize to anyone who emailed 10 days ago and hasn’t gotten a response back. i hope to clear out my inbox by sunday. thanks!
ps: hope to see some of you at renegade on saturday (and i hope this rain dies off by then…)

i’m running a little slowly this morning (darn you, jet lag!) so i wanted to start today with some eye candy from marieke van der bruggen. her edible (!) candy garden of delight, above, is so beautiful i can’t stand it. via jewel and joules.

couldn’t resist adding two more: first, this gorgeous moth light by mischer’traxler.

and last but not least, a beautiful vase by Ilona Huvenaars and Willem Derks.

good morning! ac and i just got back from montana and i’m trying to jump back into life with internet and phone connections (it was so nice to be without them for 10 days). after days of living outdoors and trying things i never thought i would, i’m now happily pouring through the emails and submissions i’ve missed. thank you for all your kind notes and honeymoon well-wishes.
i wanted to start today off with two pretty pieces that have been sitting in my inbox for a few days. first up- beautiful new ceramic lanterns from alyssa ettinger. i almost always love alyssa’s work and these new designs are no exception. i have a weakness for ball jars (we drank out of them every day in montana, yay!) so i can’t wait to see these hit stores- click here to contact alyssa about purchasing. [photos of alyssa's lanterns by jen sliker]

next up is a beautiful new chair from molly at chairloom. her intern, jacqueline quinn from the moore college of art & design designed and hand made the fabric for this chair, using water-based ink. her beautiful fabric sure does this craigslist chair justice. click here to shop this design and all of molly’s other furniture makeovers.

the student design booths at any design show are almost always my favorite. and this year the students from risd and pratt really outdid themselves. [image above: 'perch' by andrew mau of risd]

loofah ankle boot by ian horowitz of risd. i wanted to try these on so badly…

’split seat’ by isao takezawa of risd, made from vegetable tanned leather.

pratt’s ‘design for a dollar’ booth was incredibly inspiring. the students came up with the theme and tried to create products with materials that cost around $1. i loved the ‘metamorphosis’ egg crate lamp above, by sukmo koo and young taek oh.

orange votive candles by david steinvurzel.

left: ‘crystal chandelier’ made by soaking pipe cleaners in a saturated borax solution. by jennie maneri. right: ’sleeve’ sweater lamp by sara ebert.

’scissors’ by brian persico, laser cut from discarded saw blades.

hooks created by the student design winners from umbra’s design contest. the door knob coat rack is by joseph eberle, and the rorschach wall organizer is by dana otto of pratt.

my icff image folder is practically empty so it looks like today will my the last day for icff coverage on d*s. stay tuned for my favorite part- the student design booths- next. but first, here are some more great designs from the 2009 show. [image above: 'dodecahedron light' by woka, vienna]

i loved this ’sola’ desk/chair by talitha james. oh to be the student who gets to sit in this every day- so chic.

a gorgeous wooden ‘phenomena screen’ by sang hoon kim.

soft faceted block stools, called “above”, by bERT&dENNIS.

this wooden bench was so simple, but so striking in person. i loved the combination of smooth, clean cortes blanco wood and powder coated steel. the ‘clavijas’ collection was inspired by wrought iron nails found in a blacksmith’s shop and was designed by KIU.

a selection of drawer pulls from ochre. i’d love to use the dark handles on bright white kitchen drawers.

chic leather furniture from ochre. i loved the scalloped edge on the white leather bench.

jonathan adler added a wonderful series of casegoods and upholstered furniture to his collection, all with his trademark groovy style.
