trend roundup: ikat

even though ikat has had its run in the home design world over the past year or so (and has been in vogue many times before) the fashion world seems to bringing ikat back again with the spring/summer 2009 collections. i know some people are over it, but lately i’ve been blown away by email after email asking for an ikat trend roundup. and since i’m still totally loving ikat prints (and don’t think i’ll ever stop loving them used in moderation) i thought it would be fun to roundup some of our favorite ikat options in the market. thankfully i wasn’t alone in my hunting- my fantastic wintern des helped me find a huge chunk of these items, ranging from bags and rugs to pillows and clothing. i hope you’ll enjoy the ikat indulgence as much as we did. our ikat guide continues way after the jump so click here to view the full roundup or just click “read more” at the bottom of the post. thanks to des for her help with this!

mini trend: ombre

it’s been a while since my last mini-trend but after spending a day in john pomp’s studio yesterday for the nypl project i couldn’t ignore this one any more. just about everyone and their brother has been posting about ombre lately and i’ve finally given into the trend. for some reason the faded look didn’t always grab me but something must have knocked me over the head in my sleep because i woke up this morning totally hooked on the look. ombre really came back last year in fashion but it’s slowly, slowly starting to show up in the home world. AT posted some ombre rugs from west elm a while ago and i’ve been looking for more examples ever since. john’s gorgeous new stone vases were the first to really hit me, and then i realized that the new pot i’ve been coveting at williams sonoma is also an ombre fade. so i thought i’d compile some of my favorites from the worlds fashion and home and share them here. if you have any ombre favorites from the world of interior design or product design please share them below, i’d love to see some more great examples. i’m hoping to see some really beautiful ombre blankets and bedding hit the market. i’d love a rich blue or grey ombre coverlet for winter…

new mini-trend: purple

it’s no secret that purple seems to be all the rage in fashion right now, but, much like fashion, design seems to be following the purple trend as well. as i start to receive spring and summer 2008 press releases i’m noticing that all shades of purple are popping up- ranging from soft, powdery lavenders to deep, rich royal purples. so i thought i’d make a roundup of my favorite purple pieces in the market, ranging from affordable to splurge-worthy. you can view the full roundup right here or click “read more” below to see the complete post and all 12 photos. enjoy!

mini-trend: red

lately i’ve been unable to shake the fact that what was once my least favorite color is now my absolute favorite color. growing up red was just not a hue that i loved. i was more of a green lady. throw in yellow and you had my top two least favorite colors. but over the past month i’ve watched my new favorite color combination become a bright, chinese red combined with pops of bright yellow or kelly green. who would of thought?

so even though i know that purple is all the rage right now (and i agree it’s definitely everywhere), i’m feeling a strong pull towards bright red. i’ve talked to a few shop buyers over the past week on the west and east coast and along with purple, they’re all still picking up bright red pieces to accent the bold purples we’re seeing in textiles and furniture. so i thought i’d do a roundup of what i’m loving right now: red accented with pops of kelly green and bright yellow. i first fell in love with this combination when i was laying on my couch (kelly green) with my face against a judy ross pillow (bright yellow) and noticed some gorgeous red poppies i had on the credenza in my peripheral vision. the combination was so pretty that i decided to drag one of our bright red dining chairs into the room just to look at more red, green and yellow together. so, before i bore you with more stories of my haphazard chair-dragging here’s a mini-trend roundup of my favorite bright reds in the market. if you’re looking for more color roundups there is a red and white, kelly green, pink and black, delft blue and bright white roundup right here on the d*s mini-trend page. enjoy! mini trend: pink and black

etsy has a section of their website called the storque where they write about trends, sellers and all sorts of etsy-related topics. i contributed a short trends piece on black and pink using etsy sellers as examples right here. my favorite section so far is “funny forum quotes“. can’t wait to see the next installment of that one. polka-dots

i’ve been obsessing over dots and stripes for the past few weeks. i’m not normally drawn to either look but something about this classic pair has intrigued me lately. more often than not i find myself drawn to tiny black and white dots, rather than a larger variation, but i thought it would be fun to flesh out a full mini trend on each. i’m starting with dots today because i’m in the process of having a black and white dotted cushion made for the bench in my kitchen. there’s something delightfully fresh and preppy about dots so i hope you’ll enjoy the mini-trend. there’s certainly a lot of it in the market right now so you’ll find something for every price point. enjoy!
