| | | | section: recipes Joy is one of my favorite people to follow on Twitter since she moved to San Diego from Philadelphia. She has been sharing her new sunny lifestyle with her followers, in between launch parties (her own!), quick food adventures, and of course updates to her Oh Joy! blog. Joy brought us a fab recipe for little pizzas in the early days of the In the Kitchen With column. This week she’s back for a sweet recipe for one of her recent cravings in Southern California — Frozen yogurt and mochi! Even if it’s not warm and sunny where you are, I hope you’ll try this or be inspired to go find some frozen yogurt where you live. It’s never too cold for frozen yogurt is it? -Kristina

Joel’s recipe for porcini tapioca cakes also happened to remind me of “world cuisine” coming all the way from Australia. So I thought I’d do a round up of a few ‘well-rounded’ cookbooks that offer a wide range of cuisine type, just in case you get bored easily. If you’re looking for more mushroom recipes, try A Cook’s Book of Mushrooms by Jack Czarnecki (Artisan). If, instead of mushrooms, you want to try out an easy chutney recipe, see the end of this post! Have you got a favorite cookbook with a wide variety of cuisines under one binding? -Kristina

It was some of the absolute most memorable BBQ I’ve eaten (and I’m from Tennessee, so I know good BBQ!). Those of us who were there are still talking about it today! For our column, Joel has offered us a recipe for an appetizer of porcini mushroom tapioca cakes. I know it is a bit at the outer edge of the porcini mushroom season for many of you, but there are still porcinis in the market where I live. I hope you will have the chance to try the recipe if you are so inclined. Lara Ferroni did the fantastic photography for these, with the perfect small porcini mushrooms supplied by Foraged & Found Edibles. -Kristina

The one thing we did do, which really helped, was drink a lot of green tea with honey. So, when our sister, Jillian, told us she recently had an amazing drink that prominently featured green tea and honey we thought sharing the recipe with everyone would be the perfect way to pay homage to the multitudes of people suffering through cold and flu season.

This martini hails from the lovely city of Portland, ME and can be found at the bar of the wonderful restaurant Evangeline. Evangeline is a French inspired restaurant with a seasonally driven, daily changing menu. Stephen, the general manager, created this drink when he was inspired to use Italian Plums he found at a local market. As with all of his creations, he wanted this drink to be fun, creative and approachable. Most importantly it had to go well with the French cuisine while still standing on its own as a cocktail. Last week we featured the Vegetable Torta by Sara and Emma in Auckland. This week we have Cookie Cream Sandwiches (with cinnamon-chocolate semi-freddo!) from Adam, Lauren, and Susie in the Dunedin kitchen.
Notwithstanding their different locations, the team keeps their food blog going with wonderful recipes and fantastic photography. Even though Adam says the recipe is a little labor-intensive, don’t believe him! Just make it and enjoy, no matter which hemisphere you’re in! -Kristina

I envy the fact that they have their own creative space within their company to write about their passion for food. Their recipes are great as is the photography on their site. This week, given that it’s spring in their part of the world, they are sharing with us a (vegetarian) recipe for a layered vegetable ‘torta’, or savory pie. Next week, Sara and Emma’s colleagues, the other half of the “our kitchen” team will be here with a sweet recipe.
*sorry guys! i missed the non-veggie part of this recipe when i coded this last night. just remove the anchovies and ham and you’re home-free* About Sara and Emma: Sara and Emma are half of the Fisher Paykel ‘our kitchen’ team. They are based in Auckland, New Zealand, and their colleagues (who you will meet next week for a sweet recipe) are in Dunedin. Sara, a trained cook, with a Bachelor degree in Human Nutrition got hooked on food as a child watching TV personalities like Graham Kerr, Jaques Pèpin and Martin Yan. Emma got the food bug from her mom and from the time she spent in Asia as a teenager. This passion has carried on into adulthood. Today she finds her inspiration in her vegetable garden which provides plenty of food to prepare fresh seasonal and unprocessed meals.

So today we’ll be focusing on vegetarian/vegan friendly cookbooks and including a special vegan cornbread recipe at the end of the post! Also, if you’d like to try different crepe recipes (in addition to today’s crepe recipe), sweet or savory, Lou Seibert Pappas has an excellent book called Crepes (Chronicle Books) which is perfect! -Kristina
