When Christiane Lemieux of DwellStudio submitted this recipe in October, we thought it was a great idea for winter. Those of you who aren’t still watching the snow fall can take advantage of it as well. You can use whichever vegetables are in season and most flavorful, even if the recipe takes advantage of summer’s finest. Hearty soups are a great way to use up any surplus vegetables you have around and though I had every intention of pureeing the leftovers and freezing it, my husband ate it all so there were none! Vegetarians/vegans can substitute the chicken stock with a non-meat based alternative and just use toasted crostini rubbed with garlic, instead of parmesan. -Kristina

About Christiane: Canadian Christiane Lemieux is a mother of two and a half – Isabelle (4) and William (2 ) and her 12 year old Lab, Jake, who comes to the office with her every day. She is married to Josh, who is also her business partner, and she is the Founder and Creative Director of DwellStudio and DwellStudio for Target. She graduated from the Parson’s School of Design with a degree in Fashion design, and has a degree in Art History from Queen’s University in Canada. Christiane is inspired by travel, design, and all things creative and is trying to figure out how to live a life of adventure while bringing her kids along, too .

I love Australian food. Eating there really is an amazing experience– the wines, cheeses, olive oils, bread, lamb, desserts, and the best Asian food outside of Asia! I wish we had that diversity in Italy. I miss it! I crave it! So for this week’s In the Kitchen With, to nurse my ‘food nostalgia’, I contacted Australian journalist Cerentha Harris for a typical Australian dish. She gave us her sausage roll recipe. I never realized just how simple it is until I baked these in a flash two weeks ago (“As easy as falling off a log,” according to an Australian friend of mine). Now I have little packets of them in the freezer for my husband’s game nights.
About Cerentha:: Cerentha Harris is an Australian journalist living in Los Angeles. She is the editor of Herman Miller’s Lifework blog and indulges her passion for design and architecture at thisisadesignblog.com.

I have recently returned from Paris, where I had a momentary lapse of sanity and bought a total of about 50 pieces of porcelain from mud australia, Astier de Villatte, Le Petit Atelier de Paris; a Tod’s Pashmy, and of course…a little hard sided suitcase to carry it all home (NB: The sales in Paris were off the chain this year). Chris Chun was nice enough to hand carry all the way from Australia, two paintings which I purchased last autumn, and I used Pia Jane Bijkerk’s “Paris by Hand” book to guide me through the city. In the evenings, when I sat down to dinner each night with friends, there was always a lemon tart on the menu, so it was serendipity when Marjorie Taylor, of The Cook’s Atelier in Beaune, France, offered to share her recipe for a Lemon Tart with us, right as I was packing to come home from Paris. This one will definitely impress, and I’m tempted to try with other citrus flavors! – Kristina

Many of you may not know that living in Italy is bittersweet as far as food is concerned. Great Italian! Not great choices for other types of food! So I am always on the lookout for great recipes to bring that diversity to my life. This week’s recipe for Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Hoisin Peanut Sauce comes to us from Giao Trac (pronounced like “Ciao!”) from KissMySpatula.com. It’s easy easy easy to make and personalize! You’re already craving Vietnamese food today aren’t you? -Kristina

About Giao: Though Giao began her career as a management consultant for Fortune 500 clients, she’s always had a deep love for good design, and for good food. After pouring blood, sweat and tears into a two year design and remodel, Giao stepped foot into her new kitchen and never left. She began recreating her own version of restaurant favorites and whipping up homemade supermarket staples from scratch. Why go out to buy soy milk, goat cheese, baguettes, hummus, mustard or ketchup when you can make them in the comforts of home? Her food is simple, seasonal, local and organic whenever possible. She’s transferred her passion of interior design into web design and photography –with an etsy store and web design shop in the works, so stay tuned. Until then, she chronicles her homemade culinary adventures at Kiss My Spatula.

I have had a craving for a Boston Creme pie for a long time, so I was really happy when Williamsburg (Brooklyn) pastry chef Penny Stankiewicz offered up a recipe for mini Boston Creme pies just in time for Valentine’s day. If the length of the recipe seems a bit daunting, just take it a stage at a time, and it will come together quickly at the end. I hope it inspires you to make something sweet to share with someone this weekend. Or any time… You shouldn’t need an excuse to eat cake! Happy Valentine’s Day! – Kristina

About Penny: Formerly a documentary film producer, Sugar Couture owner and founder Penny Stankiewicz signed up for a pastry program at the Institute of Culinary Education to fulfill a desire to combine her interest in the food industry and her growing passion for creative expression. After completing her degree in Pastry Arts, Sugar Couture was born. Since 2004, when Penny began creating sweet, lasting memories, celebrities such as Tony Bennett, John Mayer, Wyclef Jean, Hugh Jackman, Adele, Hayley Duff, Russell Simmons, Betsey Johnson and Donna Karan have enjoyed Sugar Couture’s magnificent masterpieces. Penny lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with her husband Jay Sampson and their dog Sasha. In addition to Sugar Couture, she also offers private classes.

While we are hard at work on some major projects and enhancements at HORNE, Alissa and I are loving this creative couple kick our column seems to be on. This week’s creative couple hails from Tennessee, had their wedding featured on the cover of the premiere Issue of Southern Weddings Magazine and while one is an amazingly talented professional photographer, the other is an equally talented artist & educator. Can’t figure it out? We are honored to be featuring the preferred beverage of Tec and Chelsea Petaja. Tec Petaja is not only a widely published wedding photographer but also has a keen eye and passion for commercial photography. When not shaping young minds, Chelsea Petaja creates beautiful headbands and accessories to adorn brides (and occasionally grooms) on the most important day of their lives. (see the sneak peek into their home here!) And as if that weren’t enough creative juices in the mix (pun very much intended), they are featuring a drink created by their wardrobe stylist friend, Talitha. We hope you all enjoy! {Ryan + Alissa}

Thanks to food stylist Adam Pearson and photographer Matt Armendariz who just returned from doing a workshop at Club Med in Ixtapa, Mexico, we were able to produce absolutely stunning images of cookbook author Andrea Nguyen’s stellar recipe for Poached Vegetable and Tofu Wontons in Spicy Oil. After receiving Andrea’s fantastic cookbook Asian Dumplings last fall (a must have for anyone who loves dumplings of any types), I thought I’d invite Andrea to share a recipe that would fit In the Kitchen With readers’ interests. She was even willing to make one just for us, so based on your comments and requests on the column, I asked Andrea for a vegan dumpling, and she delivered! Don’t be intimidated by the length of the recipe– Andrea has been very explicit so that you have no troubles producing a great final product. If at first you don’t get the “nurse’s cap” fold right, don’t despair! It gets easier after the first few!
{If you’re curious about food styling and photography using real food (no gimmicks!), a workshop with Matt is coming up in March at their studio in Long Beach.}

About Andrea: Andrea Nguyen is a celebrated food writer and teacher with a unique ability to interpret traditional Asian cooking styles for modern cooks. Her work appears in the Los Angeles Times, Tastingtable.com, and Saveur, where she is also a contributing editor. Andrea’s first book, Into the Vietnamese Kitchen (Ten Speed Press 2006), was nominated for three James Beard and IACP cookbook awards. Her new book, Asian Dumplings, was released by Ten Speed Press in August 2009 and recently named as one of NPR’s 10 Best Cookbooks of 2009. Andrea lives in Santa Cruz, California, where she publishes Vietworldkitchen.com and Asiandumplingtips.com.
