whew! today is the final deadline for the d*s book manuscript and i am still writing up until the very last second. so before i dive back into the book i wanted to kick things off today with a beautiful new series of pillows and rugs from designer bev hisey. bev’s amazing home will be featured in the book- and i can’t wait to share her incredible space.

until then, these pieces are part of bev’s newest line. i have a serious crush on the letter pillow- it’s got such a modern but slightly army blanket feel, which i almost always love. the river rock carpet at the top of the post is equally sweet and sleek- i’d love to see it in a mustard yellow. but no matter what color, bev’s work is always so gorgeous in person. if you want to check out her newest pieces, click here to view the full collection. thanks, bev and matt!

designer carpets, beauty everyday & wedded bliss

good morning! today caroline has got a great post on designer carpets over at the d*s guest blog. her focus this week is the connection between fashion and home design and today’s post is all about fashion designers working on collections for the floor. i’m in love with the selections from twinkle by wenlan, but you can check out all the carpets right here.

yesterday i got my copy of the new beauty everyday “summer in the south” series and i’m LOVING it. being a southern girl, i’ll always have a soft spot for images of southern summers, so click here to check out (and pick up) your own copy. these girls have really nailed some of the elements that make up a summer below the mason dixon line.

i also wanted to thank joanna goddard (who’s on her honeymoon!) for including us in her “secrets to a happy marriage” series. we’ve only been married for 4 months, but we’ve been together for 6 years so i was happy to share some of the tips i’ve learned for sustaining a happy relationship- along with a tiny peek from our wedding. the big wedding story will be out at the end of the month (!) in the fall issue of martha stewart weddings (i’ll be posting images from our photographer after the issue comes out).

icff 2009: 10 more for the day

just like the stationery show, icff coverage will be continuing here all week, but i wanted to wrap up show coverage for the day with ten more of my favorites from icff. stay tuned tomorrow for more show coverage (and a new biz ladies post next)!

the furniture society of america booth felt a bit disjointed, but there were several great designers in their group: jennifer anderson (those are her mud and steel case chairs above), cory robinson of indiana university (that’s his table above), and my personal favorite- the lovely tanya aguiniga (that’s tanya’s soft seating directly above)

i loved the seafoam green metal detailing on this wooden table from uhuru. they’re so talented.

this line dryer and water saver from hero design lab were fantastic idea. such a clever idea for saving water- and creating something that’s visually pleasing as well (the designers were super friendly to boot).

designer patricia urquiola can do little to no wrong in my book. i loved her beaker-shaped rug at the show this year. it felt like a collection of warm winter sweaters.

this clever ‘cozy shelf’ design from michael weaker> (who we met at bklyn designs) turns any piece of wood and an L bracket into a cute decorative shelf. this floppy rubber piece just lays on top of the shelf to give the appearance of a decorative ledge. i’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more from michael in the coming year. (this was shown as part of the umbra booth)

i loved these sweater poofs (lots of sweater-motifs going on this year, seems like a trickle up from design school trends) by donna wilson and the SUM wooden wall shelves by peter marigold.

arktura’s sprout table was sweet and simple- they would be perfect for modern cafe seating. i also loved chris adamick of test collective’s turn table storage credenza. wish i could afford one of these for ac.

last but not least- lovely wooden botanical-themed shelving from pieter vantuyl.

lacey floors and lots of red

real homes: paint it black

i love magazine homes and their perfect styling, but i’ve always much preferred learning from real homes and the decisions that regular people make around the house. not to say that regular homes can’t be well styled too, but it’s great to see design details put into practice in more attainable settings.

kelsey keith of designage recently moved from park slope to the east village and sent over some pictures of her new space. what i was struck most by were the beautiful black floors in her new bedroom. if you’re lucky enough to land wooden floors in a nyc apartment, they aren’t always perfect and a coat of black paint (well, several to be precise) can sometimes be a fantastically chic fix. i’ve always seen perfect black floors in celebrity homes and in glossy magazines but it’s nice to see the idea used in a room home. the edges may not be perfect, but i think the floor gives kelsey’s bedroom an instant upgrade from normal and expected to elegant and sophisticated.

have any of you tried black floors at home? i’ve always wanted to paint our living room floors black but we’re in a rental so that’s just not happening. i’d love to see others that have tried this. thanks to kelsey for sharing!

hemmendorf floor design

one of the trends i’m really enjoying right now is hand-drawn illustrations and prints working their way into homes. i love the allan the galant paper that launched recently, and now i’m really intrigued by this hand-drawn kitchen floor created by artist/creative director olle hemmendorff in sweden. the best designs often come from someone who can’t find what they need decides to create something that suites their taste- and this is a perfect example. this piece is custom to olle’s own kitchen so sadly it’s not something available in the market, but i’d love to see brands like flor and maybe even imaginetile offer carpeting and tiles that have a hand-drawn pattern to them. they certainly wouldn’t be for everyone but then again, not everyone wants to look down and see woodgrain or an ordinary tile. click here for more on olle’s floor. faux bois fun

jon at itsknotwood sent over this fantastic faux bois rug ($149+) from pottery barn. i just picked up the faux bois mat (which is pretty big in person!) and now i’m pining over this version. so cute. thanks, jon!
