October 23rd, 2009 - 08:00am i’ve got three and a half years until i hit our fourth wedding anniversary, but erin and nicole’s fruit/floral anniversary ideas over at the d*s guest blog are making me wish it was 2013 already. they have come up with some beautiful, and creative, ways to celebrate the 4th anniversary, but their ideas also work for hostess gifts, birthdays and just-because presents (i love the custom wine label idea). click here to check out the full selection at the d*s guest blog….

question: dear design*sponge, i’m currently planning a budget wedding, so my fiance and i don’t currently have much (ok, any) extra cash with which to feather our nest. i’m wondering if you have any ideas for wedding decor that could transition into adornment for our sparse apartment once our country chic-themed fall 2010 wedding is over? there’s so much that I love about this concept- decorating our home with fond memories, being green and frugal- but I have to admit that i’m design-challenged. help! -sarah answer: thanks for your question sarah! for your answer i went straight to one of my favorite wedding sources- abby larson of stylemepretty. her expert wedding advice is spot on. so i’ll let her take it from here… This is a great question. One that every bride should ask themselves! Making your dollars really count when planning your wedding is much easier to digest when you know that the materials you buy will go to good use in making your home a more beautiful place. Here are some creative ways to stretch your dollar… 1. Your Linens. Collecting vintage, elegantly mismatched linens is such a great way to add a bit of depth to your wedding decor. Plus, you’ll always have them as a keepsake to enjoy when entertaining guests. Or you can go one step further and sew them into a gorgeous quilt that you can use when you snuggle up with your new hubby. [image above by sedona bride]
2. Your Dessert Plates. For my own wedding, we scoured ebay for pale pink cut glass dessert plates. We ended up with around 200, so I packaged them up in groups of 6-8 and gave them as housewarming gifts for the first year we were married. I kept quite a few, as well, which have been perfect for cocktail parties as well as pretty little dessert plates. They would also look pretty stunning arranged creatively on an accent wall. 3. Your Guestbook. Use a vintage postcards rather than a traditional guest book to have your friends and family write well wishes. After the wedding, tuck them in and around a vintage mirror or make an amazing collage for your walls that is as whimsical as it is meaningful. Great impromptu art. [image above by sedona bride]
4. Your Centerpieces. Whoever said centerpieces HAD to be fresh flowers was flat out wrong. Bowls or vintage trays filled with peaches, cherries or mandarin oranges would be gorgeous. Potted herbs, small topiaries or vintage lanterns would also be stunning and perfect for recycling into home decor. 5. Your Decor. Handmade throw pillows are a gorgeous accent to any seating area, particularly with weddings. They bring a sense of intimacy and warmth to any space. A collection of framed photographs, a chalkboard with your menu handwritten on it, beat-up wooden signage…all would make for pretty incredible wall decor in your home. We have some really great budget-happy, DIY inspired weddings on SMP that you will definitely love…our real weddings are filled to the brim with gorgeous ideas and practical, swoon-worthy inspirations. -Abby [have a design question you'd like answered? just shoot us an email right here with the title "dear d*s". if you're asking a specific interior design question please include a picture of the space in question and your budget for any new projects.] CLICK HERE for the second question about restoring a vintage chrome oven hood after the jump! read more … October 19th, 2009 - 10:00am today the fifth and final post about our savannah wedding is up on the d*s guest blog. today i’m wrapping things up with our wedding cake and food! if these pictures don’t make you hungry, nothing will. i’m already craving pulled pork biscuits, peach cobbler and shrimp and grits all over again. stay tuned later this afternoon for a recipe from our wedding menu! October 8th, 2009 - 08:00am phew! last night was a late night of d*s book work so i’m running a little behind this morning. but i’m so happy to kick things off with a post about the diy elements from our wedding. the martha team did a great slideshow/interview about all the crafty elements of our big day right here, but today, over at the d*s guest blog, i’m posting some of my favorite images of the handmade elements from our wedding, along with explanations of how we made them. there’s info on our stenciled table napkins, fabric escort cards, tea linen ceremony decor, silhouette paper fans (on martha tv yesterday!), paper and button flowers and much, much more. October 7th, 2009 - 08:17am today i wanted to share a few highlights about our wedding invitations, music, and decorations/rentals. our wedding was really about a million different people coming together to create something special and i’m excited to get to celebrate some of them here today. i wanted to start with an image of the porch in the garden of the harper fowlkes house- this was our bar for the reception and was decorated with gorgeous paper flowers created by erin heath. i’ll be posting more on those tomorrow. (click here for yesterday’s post on our location and the wedding party)
*all images above and below by belathee* ps: click here to see our full wedding playlist on the ms weddings site first of all, i wouldn’t have been able to coordinate everything without the help of our fantastic day-of planner, tricia huddas. i knew most of the people i wanted to work with in savannah, but she pulled in some great vendors that i didn’t know, and helped us coordinate all the details i would have gone crazy planning. tricia and i met with two of my favorite shop owners, liz demos of @home vintage general and paula of the paris market & brocante to find some of the beautiful vintage pieces we used for the wedding. both liz and paula went above and beyond to lend us antique furniture for the reception and i was blown away by their generosity. above, a gorgeous vintage green planter with swinging arms that we used to hold flowers and little notes written to us by guests.
paula at the paris market loaned us what felt like a sky-full of gorgeous antique chandeliers. there are more images of them below but i wanted to share a close-up here- they were so beautiful just hanging there in the sun, and even more gorgeous when the sun went down and we turned them on. stunning.
our wedding band was the best wedding band ever. hands down. i found the corduroy road online and was fortunate enough to get them to make the drive down from athens, ga for our ceremony. they played our walking music (such great heights, the iron and wine version), recessional music (when you love somebody, the fruit bats) and a wonderful set of their own bluegrass music during our cocktail hour. on guitar and harmonica was ian thomas- a friend of the band’s and a phenomenal musician as well.
i’ve been dying to share our invitations for over a year now and am so glad to finally share them! we worked with erin and nicole from bird and banner (love them!) to create invites that felt like “us”. we ended up using a series of over 75 different vintage handkerchiefs that had our invite screenprinted on the front! each one was folded around our rsvp card (which featured a black and white live oak tree silhouette) and secured with a woodgrain patterned sleeve. it was so cute to see so many of the men arrive at the wedding wearing the handkerchiefs as pocket squares.
